Frequently asked questions

How long do pigeon eggs take to hatch?

Pigeon eggs hatch in about 18 days, with most hatching between day 17 and day 19.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses the average length and the normal range published in veterinary references, adjusted for the breed you pick. Individual animals vary, so treat the date as the middle of a window, not a promise.

When should I candle the eggs?

Candle the eggs around day 5. Fertile eggs show veins from about day 4 to 5.

What is lockdown?

Lockdown is the last 3 days before the hatch. Stop turning the eggs, raise the humidity and keep the incubator closed so the squabs can position themselves and hatch.

Should I help a chick out of the shell?

Usually not. Hatching can take 12 to 24 hours after the first pip. Only step in if there has been no progress for a full day, and get advice first.

Is my data saved?
