Month by month

Buffalo pregnancy month by month

Enter a date in the calculator and the card for where your buffalo is today is marked You are here. Change the date or breed and the cards update.

  1. Month 1: Conception (days 1 to 29)

What's happening: The embryo attaches to the uterus. Buffalo show quiet heats, so a missed return to heat is easy to overlook.

What to do: Check for heat signs morning and evening around day 21.

  2. Month 2: Pregnancy check (days 30 to 60)

What's happening: The embryo becomes a fetus and the membranes can be felt by an experienced vet.

What to do: Book rectal palpation or ultrasound between days 40 and 60.

  3. Month 3: Early growth (days 61 to 90)

What's happening: Organs keep developing. Heat stress can still cause early loss.

What to do: Give shade, water and wallowing access in hot weather.

  4. Month 4: Steady growth (days 91 to 121)

What's happening: The fetus grows steadily with little outward sign.

What to do: Keep feed and minerals consistent.

  5. Month 5: Fetal features (days 122 to 151)

What's happening: Hooves and hair follicles form.

What to do: Deworm if your vet advises it.

  6. Month 6: Halfway (days 152 to 182)

What's happening: The calf is growing faster and the uterus moves deeper into the belly.

What to do: Check body condition and adjust concentrate.

  7. Month 7: Hair coat (days 183 to 212)

What's happening: The calf grows its hair coat and gains weight.

What to do: Keep calcium and phosphorus balanced.

  8. Month 8: Rapid growth (days 213 to 243)

What's happening: Most of the birth weight is added from now on.

What to do: Plan the dry off date.

  9. Month 9: Dry period (days 244 to 273)

What's happening: The udder rests and prepares for the next lactation.

What to do: Dry off milking buffalo about two months before calving.

  10. Month 10: Final month (days 274 to 303)

What's happening: The udder fills and the pelvic ligaments relax.

What to do: Increase concentrate and minerals and prepare a clean, shaded calving pen.

  11. Month 11: Calving window (days 304 to 325)

What's happening: Most river buffalo calve between days 300 and 320. Swamp buffalo run longer.

What to do: Watch closely. Call your vet if labour stalls or the calf is not coming normally.

Buffalo pregnancy guide

How long is a buffalo pregnant?

A buffalo is pregnant for about 310 days (about 10.2 months). The normal range is 300 to 320 days, so most calf arrive within that window rather than on the exact average day. Breed shifts the date by a few days, which is why the calculator asks for it.

Quick rule: Count about 10 months forward from the breeding or ai date, then adjust for breed.

How to use the buffalo pregnancy calculator

1. Enter the breeding or ai date. The day of artificial insemination or natural service. Tap Use today if it was today.

2. Pick the breed. The whole window moves with the breed average.

Then follow the schedule. Each task gets a real date, the next one is highlighted, the status shows whether your buffalo is on track, and the month by month cards above show where things stand. Use Copy schedule or Add to Google Calendar to keep it.

Gestation formulas

  • Estimated calving date = breeding or ai date + 310 days
  • Earliest normal calving = breeding or ai date + 300 days
  • Latest normal calving = breeding or ai date + 320 days
  • Breed adjustment = breed average minus 310 days, applied to the whole window
  • Call your vet if nothing has happened by day 325
