About and methodology
Pasture and Paw is a set of free calculators for people who breed animals: farmers with goats, sheep, cows and buffalo, horse and donkey owners, pet breeders, and backyard poultry and pigeon keepers.
Each calculator turns one date (the breeding date or the day the eggs were set) into a due date, the normal birth or hatch window, a dated care schedule, and a week by week, month by month or day by day guide.
How the dates are worked out
Every animal has three numbers: the average length of pregnancy or incubation, and the earliest and latest days of the normal range. The calculator adds those to your date.
- Breed: each breed has its own average. Picking a breed moves the whole window by the difference.
- Litter size: for goats and sheep, singles tend to arrive a day later and triplets a day earlier.
- Date type: for dogs, an LH surge or ovulation date from your vet gives a tighter estimate than the mating date.
- Vet date: each animal also has a day after which you should call the vet (or candle unhatched eggs) even if all seems well.
The averages and ranges come from veterinary textbooks, university extension services and breed society guidance.
What the calculators cannot do
They cannot tell you whether an animal is pregnant, how many young she carries or whether a birth is going well. Only an examination can do that. Every page links the key moments to call your vet.
