Day by day

Goose incubation day by day

Enter a date in the calculator and the card for where goose eggs are today is marked You are here. Change the date or breed and the cards update.

  1. Days 1 to 5: Blood vessels and heartbeat

What's happening: The embryo forms on the yolk and a tiny heart starts beating. Blood vessels spread out like a spider web.

What to do: Keep the temperature steady and turn the eggs at least 3 times a day. An odd number means they rest on alternate sides overnight.

  2. Days 6 to 10: Eyes, limbs and first candling

What's happening: The dark eye spot and the limb buds appear and the embryo starts to move. Veins are easy to see when you candle.

What to do: Candle the eggs and remove clear ones and any with a blood ring.

  3. Days 11 to 20: Feathers and beak

What's happening: Feather tracts, claws and the beak form. The embryo fills more of the egg each day.

What to do: Keep turning. Check the water in the incubator and keep humidity steady.

  4. Days 21 to 26: Growth and positioning

What's happening: The goslings grow quickly and absorb the egg white. The air cell gets bigger and the egg looks dark when candled.

What to do: Candle a second time and remove eggs that have stopped developing. Get the brooder ready.

  5. Days 27 to 35: Lockdown and hatch

What's happening: The goslings turn into hatching position, break into the air cell (internal pip), then pip the shell and zip around it.

What to do: Stop turning, raise humidity to about 75 to 80 percent and keep the lid closed. Leave hatched goslings in the incubator until they are dry.

Goose incubation guide

How long do goose eggs take to hatch?

Goose eggs take about 30 days to hatch. Most hatch between day 28 and day 34, depending on breed and how steady the incubator temperature was. Breed shifts the date by a few days, which is why the calculator asks for it.

Quick rule: Count 30 days from the day you set the eggs. Lockdown starts 3 days before that.

How to use the goose egg incubation calculator

1. Enter the date eggs were set. The day the eggs went into the incubator or under the goose. Tap Use today if it was today.

2. Pick the breed. The whole window moves with the breed average.

Then follow the schedule. Each task gets a real date, the next one is highlighted, the status shows whether goose eggs are on track, and the day by day cards above show where things stand. Use Copy schedule or Add to Google Calendar to keep it.

Hatch date formulas

  • Estimated hatch date = date eggs were set + 30 days
  • Earliest normal hatch = date eggs were set + 28 days
  • Latest normal hatch = date eggs were set + 34 days
  • Lockdown = hatch date minus 3 days
  • Candle any unhatched eggs if nothing has happened by day 35

Frequently asked questions

How long do goose eggs take to hatch?

Goose eggs hatch in about 30 days, with most hatching between day 28 and day 34. Breed matters: Most breeds about 30 days, Large breeds, Embden, Toulouse about 32 days.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses the average length and the normal range published in veterinary references, adjusted for the breed you pick. Individual animals vary, so treat the date as the middle of a window, not a promise.

When should I candle the eggs?

First candling around day 10. Remove clear eggs that show no veins. Fertile eggs show veins and a dark spot.

What is lockdown?

Lockdown is the last 3 days before the hatch. Stop turning the eggs, raise the humidity and keep the incubator closed so the goslings can position themselves and hatch.

Should I help a chick out of the shell?

Usually not. Hatching can take 12 to 24 hours after the first pip. Only step in if there has been no progress for a full day, and get advice first.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
