Month by month

Goat pregnancy month by month

Enter a date in the calculator and the card for where your doe is today is marked You are here. Change the date or breed and the cards update.

  1. Month 1: Conception and implantation (days 1 to 29)

What's happening: The embryo travels to the uterus and attaches around days 18 to 22. She will not come back into heat if she is bred.

What to do: Avoid stress, rough handling and transport. Keep her on her normal feed.

  2. Month 2: Pregnancy confirmed (days 30 to 60)

What's happening: The placenta develops and the kids’ organs form. A blood test or ultrasound can now confirm the pregnancy.

What to do: Book a scan or blood test. Give free choice minerals and avoid mouldy hay.

  3. Month 3: Steady growth (days 61 to 90)

What's happening: The kids grow steadily and their skeletons begin to harden. Ultrasound can count kids until about day 90.

What to do: Count the kids by scan. If she is milking, start drying her off late this month.

  4. Month 4: Rapid growth begins (days 91 to 121)

What's happening: About 70 percent of the kids’ growth happens in the last six weeks, so her energy needs rise sharply.

What to do: Raise energy and protein. Watch for pregnancy toxaemia: dullness, going off feed or wobbling.

  5. Month 5: Kidding month (days 122 to 155)

What's happening: The udder fills, the ligaments by the tail soften and she starts to separate from the herd.

What to do: Give the CD and T booster, set up the kidding pen and check her morning and evening.

Goat pregnancy guide

How long is a goat pregnant?

A goat is pregnant for about 150 days (about 4.9 months). The normal range is 145 to 155 days, so most kids arrive within that window rather than on the exact average day. Breed shifts the date by a few days, which is why the calculator asks for it.

Quick rule: Count about 5 months forward from the breeding date, then adjust for breed.

How to use the goat pregnancy calculator

1. Enter the breeding date. The day the buck covered her. If he ran with the herd, use the first day you saw her bred. Tap Use today if it was today.

2. Pick the breed. The whole window moves with the breed average.

Optional: expected kids. Singles tend to arrive a day later, triplets a day earlier.

Then follow the schedule. Each task gets a real date, the next one is highlighted, the status shows whether your doe is on track, and the month by month cards above show where things stand. Use Copy schedule or Add to Google Calendar to keep it.

Gestation formulas

  • Estimated kidding date = breeding date + 150 days
  • Earliest normal kidding = breeding date + 145 days
  • Latest normal kidding = breeding date + 155 days
  • Breed adjustment = breed average minus 150 days, applied to the whole window
  • Call your vet if nothing has happened by day 155
